Pair of Antique Cast Iron Street Light Bases with Heraldic Eagle & Mural Crown Motif, c.1890–1915
A commanding pair of antique cast iron street light bases, likely originating from a municipal or institutional streetscape in Quebec, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century.
Cast in heavy iron with an octagonal upper transition and deeply molded plinth base, each unit features an access panel adorned with a heraldic eagle beneath a mural crown—a symbolic pairing historically associated with civic authority, vigilance, and the identity of the city.
The scale and construction are unmistakably architectural. A 9" diameter opening at the top would have supported a substantial boulevard standard, placing these firmly within the realm of true civic infrastructure rather than residential or garden ornament.
Today, they read as sculptural objects—monolithic, grounded, and rich with presence. Ideal as statement pedestals, entry markers, or as the foundation for a custom lighting installation.
Dimensions (each):
28" W x 28" D x 65" H
Top opening: 9" diameter
Condition:
Original black finish with expected surface wear, paint loss, and areas of oxidation consistent with age and outdoor exposure. Access doors present; no keys. No visible foundry marks. Structurally sound and exceptionally heavy.
Notes on Use:
Suitable for interior or exterior installation. Can be adapted to support custom lamp posts, lanterns, or sculptural elements. Also highly effective as standalone architectural forms in both residential and commercial settings.
Shipping:
These are extremely heavy cast iron units. We recommend palletized freight or white glove delivery.
