Antique Mercantile Glass Display Cabinet with Marble Kick Plate | c. Early 1900s
Antique Mercantile Glass Display Cabinet with Marble Kick Plate | c. Early 1900s
A remarkable survivor from the golden age of brick-and-mortar retail, this early 20th century mercantile display cabinet offers the craftsmanship, scale, and presence rarely found in modern fixtures.
Measuring an impressive 100 inches long, this cabinet was clearly designed for a substantial commercial setting. The combination of hardwood construction, expansive glass display surfaces, and a distinctive black marble base trim / kick plate suggests a higher-end retail environment — possibly a jeweller, haberdashery, pharmacy, department store, or specialty retailer where presentation mattered.
The cabinet features glass on three sides with a full glass top, creating a generous display area ideal for showcasing collections, retail goods, textiles, artifacts, or decorative objects. Rear sliding access doors allow the cabinet to remain functional as originally intended.
The marble detail is particularly noteworthy. While many surviving general store counters were built with simple wood bases, the addition of stone trim reflects a more refined commercial installation and gives the piece a sophisticated architectural quality.
This piece remains in as-found antique condition with the character earned from decades of use. The glass is complete, however one end panel has a significant crack. The top glass shows heavy surface wear, scratches, and evidence of years of daily service. Wood surfaces retain an aged patina with expected wear consistent with age and use.
