Vintage Dutch Teak Folding Screen with Chinoiserie-Inspired Carvings

Acquired from a Dutch antique dealer, this uncommon folding screen is crafted in teak with book-matched teak veneer panels and features finely carved Chinoiserie-inspired appliqués, sculptural claw feet, and turned side spindles. While its decorative motifs draw inspiration from traditional East Asian design, the overall execution reflects the European fascination with Oriental styling that flourished during the late 1960s and early 1970s.

The quality of construction sets this piece apart. The frame-and-panel design, carefully matched veneers, crisp carved details, and substantial carved feet speak to the work of a skilled cabinetmaker rather than a mass-produced import. Whether used as a room divider, entrance screen, backdrop for a reception area, or simply as a sculptural focal point, it commands attention from every angle.

The pierced upper carvings appear to reference the traditional Chinese bat motif, long associated with good fortune and prosperity, while the lower medallions feature sculptural turned bosses set within radiating sunburst carvings. Together they create a unique decorative vocabulary that feels both European and unmistakably inspired by the East.

Equally beautiful from the front and back, the screen is constructed with frame-and-panel joinery and book-matched teak veneers, underscoring the level of craftsmanship throughout. It folds flat for transport, making it as practical as it is decorative.

Condition

Very good vintage condition with a warm, original finish and rich teak patina. The screen is solid, stable, and operates as intended.

As expected with a vintage piece of this age, there are a few cosmetic imperfections. A previous dealer's inventory label left a faint permanent marker stain on the upper rail after removal. There is also a small localized area of veneer loss on one decorative panel, consistent with age and use. Both imperfections are cosmetic only, do not affect the structural integrity of the screen, and are shown clearly in the accompanying photographs. We have chosen to preserve the original finish rather than undertake invasive repairs. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form part of the description.
