Monumental Antique Plate Glass Mirror with Aged Silvering

A truly monumental antique mirror with beautifully aged plate glass and a wonderfully simple, timeworn frame.

Measuring an impressive 64.5" wide x 70.5" high, this is a substantial piece with extraordinary presence. The exceptionally thick, heavy plate glass retains extensive age-related deterioration to the original silvering, creating a layered, softly distressed surface that simply cannot be replicated in new glass.

The mirror is framed in moulded wood with an old painted finish and considerable wear, including areas of paint loss, chips, marks and exposed earlier finishes. We have intentionally left both the frame and mirror plate as found.

Its original setting is unknown, but the sheer scale suggests a mirror made for a substantial interior — perhaps a hotel, restaurant, retail establishment or large private residence. Today, it would make a remarkable architectural statement in a dining room, entrance hall, commercial space, restaurant or hotel.

Despite the extensive ageing of the silvering, the mirror remains highly reflective. Depending on the light and surroundings, areas of deterioration become more or less pronounced, giving the glass an ever-changing character. Reflections of windows, lighting and architectural details are particularly striking.

This is not a pristine mirror, nor would we want it to be. The aged plate glass is the feature.

The mirror is exceptionally large and very heavy. Appropriate professional mounting hardware and installation will be required. We recommend installation by an experienced professional familiar with oversized antique mirrors.
