Mid-19th Century French Provincial Armoire in Cherry Fruitwood
Mid-19th Century French Provincial Armoire in Cherry Fruitwood
49" W x 17.25" D x 71.5" H
A beautifully proportioned mid-19th century European armoire, likely French or Belgian in origin, crafted in richly toned cherry or fruitwood with carved hardwood embellishments and a warm, lustrous patina developed over generations of use.
The understated elegance of the piece reflects the influence of the Louis Philippe period, with its boldly moulded cornice, paneled doors, carved acanthus-inspired corner details, and turned feet. While decorative, the design remains restrained and practical—qualities that have allowed French provincial furniture to remain relevant in both traditional and contemporary interiors.
Unlike many antique armoires, this example features unusually shallow proportions, measuring just 17.25 inches deep. This makes it exceptionally versatile for modern homes, cottages, apartments, boutiques, and hospitality settings where floor space is at a premium but character is essential.
The interior is fitted with shelving and a drawer, making it well suited for linens, folded clothing, pantry storage, or general household organization. The original working key accompanies the piece, and the interior retains much of its authentic character.
Condition is very good overall, with expected wear consistent with age and use. There is minor loss to one lower corner, as shown in the photographs. The piece remains structurally sound and presents beautifully.
A refined and highly functional example of provincial European craftsmanship that offers the warmth and authenticity only genuine antique furniture can provide.
