Antique Cast Iron Architectural Finial
Antique Cast Iron Architectural Finial
A substantial antique cast iron architectural finial with a striking classical silhouette and beautifully aged black painted finish.
Standing 22 inches tall, this impressive piece features a rounded urn-form body, sweeping shoulders and a distinctive ball-and-spire top. Cast as a single hollow piece and weighing 41 pounds, it speaks to the materials and craftsmanship of traditional architectural ironwork.
Likely originally used as an ornamental feature on a building, gatepost or masonry pier, the finial has wonderful sculptural presence. Equally at home in a garden setting or displayed indoors on a console, pedestal or cabinet, it offers an interesting contrast when paired with contemporary furnishings.
The aged black finish retains surface wear, oxidation and patina. An earlier repair is evident at the lower pedestal, extending approximately two inches upward from the base rim. The circumstances of the damage and repair are unknown. Please refer to the detailed photographs.
A distinctive piece of architectural salvage, equally appealing for its history, form and decorative possibilities.
