Monumental Victorian Oak Staircase Archway & Griffin Newel Post | Hotel Dieu, Kingston c.1892

An extraordinary surviving piece of late 19th-century Ontario architecture.

This monumental Victorian oak staircase archway was salvaged from Kingston's historic Hotel Dieu Hospital and dates to approximately 1892. We were told that it formed part of an elaborate staircase in one of the hospital's principal lobbies, where its scale and richly carved detailing would have created an impressive architectural focal point.

Measuring an exceptional 113" W x 147" H, the structure incorporates a pair of rounded arches supported by fluted columns and an elaborate central carved newel post.

The newel post is a remarkable piece of Victorian craftsmanship in its own right. Its many architectural elements include deep relief carving, panelled and turned sections, a fluted column and an intricately carved capital. At its base is perhaps the most compelling detail: a pair of opposing winged griffins surrounded by carved foliage.

Griffins have a centuries-old association with guardianship and protection and were frequently incorporated into historic architecture and decorative arts. Their prominent position on the newel post is particularly evocative given the piece's original setting within Hotel Dieu, although their specific symbolism and the intentions of the original carver are unknown.

The surrounding oak architecture is equally impressive. Layered mouldings follow the curves of the twin arches, while carved fan motifs, geometric detailing and substantial capitals give the entire composition the richness expected of an important Victorian institutional interior.

A Significant Piece of Architectural Salvage

The archway was carefully salvaged and subsequently stored for more than a decade. Considering its age, enormous scale and architectural origin, it survives with remarkably little loss.

The existing finish shows wonderful variation, surface wear and patina acquired over more than 130 years. We have intentionally left the piece as found, preserving the character and evidence of age that make original architectural elements like this increasingly difficult to replicate.

At nearly twelve and a half feet tall, this is architecture rather than simply decoration.

It could be incorporated into a significant residential interior, hotel, restaurant or hospitality project; used in the restoration or reinterpretation of a historic building; or installed independently as a dramatic architectural feature. The individual components and extraordinary newel post also offer considerable possibilities for a thoughtful adaptive installation.

For architects, designers, collectors and clients looking for genuine historic architectural material, it is an exceptional opportunity to acquire a substantial surviving element with a known Ontario provenance.
