Hand-Carved Architectural Cornucopia Reliefs, c. 1900–1925
Hand-Carved Architectural Cornucopia Reliefs, c. 1900–1925
Pair | Bas Relief Wood Panels | 54" L
A dramatic pair of hand-carved architectural cornucopia — richly detailed bas relief panels celebrating abundance, harvest, and classical ornament.
Likely created between 1900 and 1925, these sculptural fragments were originally part of a grand architectural interior — possibly crowning an overdoor, arch, stage proscenium, or civic façade. The curved upper edge suggests they once followed a pediment line or architectural sweep.
Each horn overflows with fruit and grape clusters, deeply carved with dimensional shadow and strong sculptural movement. The voluted ends and ribbed horn bodies reflect Neoclassical Revival and Beaux-Arts influence — ornament meant to be seen from across a room.
Traces of surface variation suggest they may have once been polychrome or glazed, adding depth to the carving. Today, they retain a soft, timeworn finish that enhances their architectural presence.
These are not decorative appliqués — they are true architectural fragments, scaled for impact.

Design Notes
Designers are using large architectural fragments like these:
-
Above fireplaces or overmantels
-
Flanking wine cellar entries
-
Installed above grand passageways
-
As sculptural wall installations in restaurants and hospitality projects
-
Layered in transitional spaces to add depth and history
The scale allows them to command space without additional framing. Mounted properly, they read as architectural sculpture rather than décor.
Condition
Solid wood construction.
Surface wear consistent with age and prior installation.
Evidence suggests possible earlier polychrome or tonal glazing.
Structurally sound.
As with all early architectural salvage, minor irregularities are part of their character.
Why We Love Them
The scale.
The depth of carving.
The theatrical movement.
The symbolism of abundance — especially compelling in dining, hospitality, and wine-focused interiors.
They feel European in spirit, but equally at home in a refined modern interior.
