Antique Ontario Country Store Post Office Cubby
Antique Ontario Country Store Post Office Cubby
An extraordinary piece of Eastern Ontario mercantile history.
This substantial antique pine mail sorter features 66 individual compartments behind a striking grid of original wavy glass. Believed to have originated in a late 19th-century country store that also served as the local post office, it is a beautiful example of practical craftsmanship with a distinctly architectural presence.
The original dark painted finish has developed a rich, timeworn character, with areas of exposed pine, layers of old paint and remnants of period advertising still attached to one side. These details speak to a long working life and contribute to the character and authenticity of the piece. The advertising could be removed if desired, although we have chosen to preserve it.
The 66 individual compartments are accessed from the rear, leaving the glass frontage uninterrupted. Original wavy glass remains in 60 of the 66 compartments, adding texture and character to the remarkable grid of small display spaces.
Perfect for showcasing books, curiosities, natural history specimens, small collections and treasured objects, this piece invites a little imagination. Equally at home in a contemporary interior, country house, retail environment or hospitality setting, it offers an unexpected way to display the things we choose to live with.
