Salvaged from an Ottawa church, this substantial arched-top pine door carries the quiet presence that only institutional architecture seems to achieve. Its softly rounded crown, deeply recessed panels, and layered painted surface give the piece a distinctly architectural character that feels equally at home in a historic restoration or a restrained contemporary interior.

The door retains traces of its original faux oak graining beneath later church-era brown paint, creating remarkable visual depth across the panel surfaces. The surviving hand-painted grain work remains visible throughout, particularly where decades of use have softened the upper paint layers and revealed the craftsmanship beneath.

Constructed from solid pine with a substantial 1.75" thickness, the door also retains its original spring-loaded hinges and pull hardware as found. The proportions are especially appealing — tall and narrow enough to work comfortably in residential settings while still carrying the scale and drama associated with ecclesiastical salvage.

An exceptional candidate for:

  • a pantry or wine room entrance
  • library or office door
  • oversized pocket or sliding door
  • boutique hospitality project
  • dramatic interior transition
  • layered historic restoration

Installed as found, the door offers warmth, texture, and authenticity. Stripped and refinished, it could equally become something cleaner and more contemporary while still retaining its original character.

The lamp is the perfect accoutrement to my Great, Grandfather’s roll top desk. I’m the 4 th generation in my family to labour away on its planks.
