Antique Oversized Maple Pocket Door c. 1920
Antique Oversized Maple Pocket Door c. 1920
A dramatic architectural survivor from a 1920s Oshawa residence, this oversized maple pocket door captures the quiet craftsmanship of early twentieth-century millwork.
At an impressive 48 inches wide and nearly 8 feet tall, the scale alone makes this piece remarkable. Originally designed to glide into a wall pocket separating formal rooms — often between a parlour and dining room — doors of this width were used to create grand, flexible interiors that could open or close depending on the occasion.
Constructed from solid maple, the door features six recessed panels framed by crisp moulded profiles typical of late Edwardian / early Colonial Revival interiors. One side retains its historic painted finish, while the opposite side has been stripped to reveal the warm grain and subtle figure of the maple beneath — a beautiful contrast that speaks to the layered life of the piece.
The original roller hardware remains intact, a rare and desirable detail that preserves the door’s authentic engineering and allows it to be reinstalled in a traditional pocket track if desired.
With its exceptional proportions and sculptural presence, this door works equally well as a functional architectural element or as a dramatic design feature — whether installed on a sliding track, incorporated into a large renovation, or simply mounted as a statement wall panel in a modern interior.
A wonderful example of Canadian architectural salvage where craftsmanship, scale, and patina meet.
