Antique Oak Cheese Merchant's Display Case

A wonderful survivor from the golden age of the Canadian neighbourhood grocer, this antique oak cheese display case dates to the early twentieth century—a remarkable period when cheese production had become one of Canada’s great agricultural success stories.

At the turn of the twentieth century, thousands of local cheese factories operated across rural Canada, producing the large wheels of cheddar that helped make cheese the country’s second-largest export after timber. Cases like this would have proudly displayed those impressive wheels on the grocer’s counter while protecting them from dust and insects until they were cut to order.

Crafted in solid quarter-sawn oak with glass on all four sides and the top, the case features a tab/pull that raises the entire glazed enclosure allowing effortless access while serving customers.

The display retains its rich original finish, original hardware, period glass, and screened ventilation openings—beautiful reminders of an era before modern refrigeration transformed food retailing.

Originally, the interior would have featured a removable marble or milk glass display slab. While that insert is no longer present, the case remains a striking and highly functional display cabinet for today’s home, retail, or hospitality environments.
