Antique Cast Iron Bookbinding Press | Circa 1900
Antique Cast Iron Bookbinding Press | Circa 1900
A handsome antique cast iron bookbinding press, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. Beautifully proportioned, with a sweeping curved crossbar, turned finials and a substantial circular hand wheel.
The press retains its original black painted finish, with remnants of gold decorative detailing and the wonderful patina acquired through generations of use. The heavy cast iron construction and threaded screw mechanism speak to an era when even the most practical workshop equipment was made with an appreciation for design.
In excellent working condition, the handwheel turns smoothly, raising and lowering the pressing plate as intended.
Originally designed for pressing books and bound materials, this substantial piece would be equally at home in a library, study, artist's studio or as a sculptural accent in a thoughtfully furnished interior.
Condition: Excellent antique condition with original painted finish, age-related wear, remnants of gold decoration and a small area of loss to the cast iron base, as photographed. Fully functional. No identifiable manufacturer's mark.
