19th Century Victorian Secretary Bookcase with Architectural Pediment
19th Century Victorian Secretary Bookcase with Architectural Pediment
Nine feet of architectural presence, beautiful woodwork and more than a century of history.
This remarkable 19th-century Victorian secretary bookcase combines a glazed upper display cabinet with a fitted drop-front writing desk, all beneath an impressive architectural pediment crowned by a turned urn finial.
Look closely and the details begin to tell their own story. Cabinetmaker's assembly marks remain visible beside the upper door hinges. Delicate wooden mouldings frame the old glass, with small air bubbles caught within. The warm wood tones, decorative carvings and beautifully proportioned cabinetry speak to the craftsmanship of another era.
Open the drop-front desk to reveal a wonderful fitted interior, complete with a series of arched pigeonholes, two small drawers and additional compartments. The aged green writing surface retains the character of generations of use.
The upper cabinet provides generous display space behind two glazed doors, while the lower cabinet offers additional enclosed storage. The substantial architectural pediment is removable, allowing for easier transportation and an alternative, more restrained appearance.
Time has left its mark. There are areas of veneer loss, a well-worn writing surface, and imperfections accumulated over generations. Rather than undertaking a full restoration, we have chosen to preserve the cabinet's existing character. These details are documented in the accompanying photographs.
An extraordinary piece for a library, country house, creative workspace or contemporary interior where old and new are comfortably at home.
