A wonderful example of 19th-century Dutch provincial craftsmanship, this handsome rent table combines practical design with a beautifully preserved decorative finish. Traditionally found in farmhouses and estate offices throughout the Netherlands, rent tables were used for keeping accounts and collecting rents, with a single locking drawer providing secure storage for ledgers, correspondence and valuables.

What immediately sets this example apart is its exceptional faux-grained finish. Carefully hand-painted to imitate richly figured quarter-sawn oak, the decorative treatment was a highly skilled technique popular throughout the Netherlands during the 19th century. Remarkably well preserved, it gives the table warmth, depth and visual character that is seldom found today.

Raised on elegant turned baluster legs joined by a classic H-form stretcher, the table possesses the sturdy proportions expected of a hardworking piece while maintaining a refined presence suitable for today's interiors. The original working lock and key remain intact, adding another layer of authenticity.

Equally at home as a writing desk, entry table, sofa table or kitchen island accent, this is a versatile piece that bridges traditional craftsmanship with contemporary interiors.
