19th Century Copper Sacred Heart Church Cupola Cap

A remarkable survivor from a late 19th-century Catholic church, this hand-crafted solid copper architectural artifact is believed to have crowned a church cupola or roof lantern. Retaining its rich weathered patina and centuries of honest wear, it stands today as both an extraordinary work of craftsmanship and a sculptural piece of architectural history.

Hand formed from heavy sheet copper and assembled with hundreds of hand-set rivets, the piece is crowned by the iconic Sacred Heart of Jesus beneath a Latin cross—an enduring symbol found throughout Catholic churches in France, Spain, French Canada, and beyond. While its exact origin remains unknown, its materials, construction, and craftsmanship are entirely consistent with ecclesiastical copperwork of the late nineteenth century.

The faceted copper base, with its graceful folded planes, would once have capped a square cupola or small bell turret, creating a striking silhouette against the sky. The lower skirt remains folded from its removal, offering the opportunity for restoration while preserving the authenticity of its long service atop a sacred building.

Original as found. Heavy copper construction with naturally weathered patina. Age-appropriate dents, oxidation, and construction marks consistent with decades of architectural use. The lower copper skirt remains folded from salvage and has not been restored.
