19th Century Chinese Painted Tapered Cabinet
19th Century Chinese Painted Tapered Cabinet
An unusual 19th century Chinese cabinet with wonderful proportions, traditional construction and an exceptionally good worn surface.
Standing over 82" high, the cabinet has a subtly tapered form, narrowing in both width and depth from bottom to top. The façade is particularly striking, with two sets of panelled doors, small drawers, narrow side panels and a broad lower section creating an almost architectural appearance.
The dark brown and charcoal painted finish has worn naturally over time, revealing traces of blue-green, warm wood tones and earlier layers beneath. The result is a wonderfully understated surface quite different from the brighter red and highly decorated finishes often associated with traditional Chinese furniture.
Construction details are equally interesting. The doors operate on traditional wooden pivot hinges, with extensions of the door stiles fitting directly into the cabinet frame rather than using conventional metal hinges. Small hammered iron ring pulls retain their simple hand-worked character.
And then there is the surprise: a concealed storage compartment hidden within the cabinet.
Sometimes referred to in the decorative antiques market as a Chinese wedding cupboard, this is a particularly unusual example. We are drawn less to the formal label than to its scale, beautifully worn surface and unexpected construction—a highly decorative cabinet that works remarkably well in contemporary, rustic and collected interiors.

Why we like it: The taper, layered dark surface and secret compartment make this anything but a typical Chinese cabinet.
