oversized-antique-oak-exhibit-display-case-with-original-rippled-glass
Oversized Antique Oak Exhibit Display Case with Original Rippled Glass

An exceptional oversized antique wall display case, likely dating to the late 19th or early 20th century.

Measuring an impressive 72" high, the case is constructed with a substantial oak frame surrounding a simple gilt inner moulding and a remarkably large panel of original rippled glass. The movement and distortion within the old glass is wonderful, particularly when viewed across a room or with objects displayed behind it.

The shallow interior was purpose-built for display. Black velvet lines the interior perimeter, with remnants of the same fabric remaining on the removable back panel. The back is secured using a combination of substantial wooden pegs and screws — straightforward period construction that allowed the display to be accessed and changed.

No maker's marks or identifying labels were found during our inspection. While its original setting is unknown, the scale, shallow depth and construction are consistent with the large exhibit and exhibition cases used in institutional and commercial interiors for displaying collections, documents, photographs, textiles, specimens and other relatively shallow objects.

Today, it offers all sorts of possibilities. Used as a collector's display case, incorporated into a retail or hospitality interior, or filled sparingly with a carefully chosen collection, its sheer scale gives it an architectural presence that smaller wall cases simply don't have.

We would be equally happy to see it left largely empty. The oak, gilt surround and beautifully imperfect old glass make it a compelling object in its own right.

Offered as found, retaining the marks, wear and evidence of previous display that speak to its long working life.

Details

Date: Late 19th / early 20th century, circa 1900
Material: Oak, glass, wood, gilt-finished inner moulding, velvet
Overall Dimensions: 54" W × 72" H × 5" D
Interior Display Area: 41.5" W × 59.5" H × 2.75" D
Glass: Original antique rippled/wavy glass
Mounting: Wall-mounted display case
Origin: Unknown
Price: $2,750 CAD

Condition

Good antique condition with wear consistent with age and extensive previous use. The oak frame retains scratches, marks and areas of finish wear. The interior backing shows evidence of previous displays and retains remnants of black velvet.
