early-19th-century-ontario-six-panel-door
Early 19th Century Ontario Six-Panel Door

A remarkable architectural artifact from an 1831 stone Squire's house in the Napanee area of Eastern Ontario.

This early six-panel door has survived with the evidence of its long working life very much intact. Layers of warm ochre paint, beautifully worn surfaces and striking early hardware give the door a presence that simply can't be recreated.

One of our favourite details is the wonderfully pragmatic sheet-metal repair wrapped around the lower corner — an old solution to historic damage that has become an important part of the door's story. The aged metal, worn paint and accumulated surface patina are exactly as we found them.

The door retains wonderful old hardware on both sides, including an iron latch mechanism and a particularly handsome shaped pull and escutcheon.

While an obvious candidate for a historic house or restoration project, we particularly like doors like this used in unexpected settings. Against clean plaster, contemporary millwork, stone, concrete or steel, an early painted door can introduce history and character without making a room feel overly traditional.

Old and new. Never boring.

Offered in as-found condition. Paint loss, crazing, wear, historic repairs and surface variation are consistent with its considerable age and are considered an integral part of its character.

Dimensions:
32.75" W × 76.75" H × 1.375" thick

Origin: Napanee area, Eastern Ontario
Date: Circa 1830s
